talkingsafety.org or Talking Safety  is a website of information about working and talking about safety with Young Workers. The website talks about safety in general and gives off facts, tips and even statistics that are significant to safety with young workers and their supervisors. The goal of the site is for Youth Workers is to be aware of the risks and safety issues in their work place and surrounding. The goal of the site for Supervisors is to enable them to reach out to Young Workers about safety and work in the most efficient way.

The Website is pretty simple. The tabs are straight forward and are categorize accordingly. It is also arranged in sequences from chapter to chapter. The site offers self-assessment quizzes for both Supervisor and Youth worker. The articles and tips are short and simple; they are usually followed by Self-Assessments that can be done before or after you read the information. Youth can check-out the supervisor’s section and Supervisors can do the same thing. So both have an idea of what is each other’s role.

 The presentation of the website is good, professional-looking and simple. The only problem is with the self-assessment quizzes; you can check your answers afterwards and even send the answer sheet to your email. But some them, when you check them, have a default page of results. It is not as accurate but you can still get the information you need.

To have a safe handling of these materials especially when using them, it is important to have and wear the correct and proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Always use the appropriate eyewear, face shields, gloves, respiratory protection and chemical-resistant clothing when working with these materials and carefully follow the given instructions to you.

Western Australian OSH regulatory bodies:

WorkCover WA

WorkCover WA is a government agency who is in charge of overseeing the worker’s compensation and injury management within Western Australia. They specifically follow and invoke the Workers’ Compensation and Injury Management Act 198, power and function is under Section 100 and 101 of the Act. It is their job to inform people about the law. So, they educate employers and other workers to promote and be aware of the law about the Workers’ compensation and Injury management act. It is their responsibility that every organisation, employers, company, etc. will execute an effective safety system at work. They are also responsible for the inclusion of disabled people by secure access of facilities and services.
They mostly work with employers and are funded through an annual levy on premiums paid by employers to insure approved underwrite workers’ compensation insurance and also approved by self-insurers. The laws or act needs to be approved by the legislation before execution.
The agency is governed by a Chairman and six members, they are appointed by Governor.

WorkSafe

Worksafe is an organisation under the Department of Commerce in WA. They are the administrator of Occupational Health and safety in WA. The goal of Occupational Safety and Health Act 1984 is to promote and inform about the safety and health condition and situations to employers and workers of organisations and stakeholders to be implemented in their workplace. They do not manage the implication of the law in Western Australia but they form, check and manage the act to be passed and it’s their responsibility to distribute information and updates to organisations.
The Department of Commerce was formed 1st of January 2009 and has many divisions. One of these divisions is WorkSafe. The Minister for Commerce is Hon. Michael Mischin, who serves and lead the department.

Department of mines and petroleum

They are the prime government agency responsible for WA’s mining, petroleum and geothermal energy. They research and gather information for private investor and companies. They also regulate and manage the safety, health and environment standards that is based on the commonwealth and state ‘s legislation, regulation and policies. They’re also responsible for extractive industries and dangerous products.
The Department of Mines and Petroleum (DMP) is also a part of Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP); this is a business plan in building a good relationship with Indigenous and Non-Indigenous. In this plan they make programs and training in building employee knowledge of indigenous culture, history and develop an encouraging positive workplace. They also encourage to have a good relationship with the Indigenous community. This program was launch 11th of September 2012. The Department is also committed in educating the community about the natural resources, resource development and regulation in WA.
